Welcoming Dr. Rajeev Kumar back to Deakin Private Hospital

A psychiatrist committed to person-centered care

We are excited to announce that Dr Rajeev Kumar will be rejoining our team at Deakin Private Hospital starting 2nd February. Dr Kumar was a valued member of our team from 2023 - 2025, and we are thrilled to have him back on board.

With extensive experience and a strong academic background, Dr. Kumar brings both expertise and compassion to the field of mental health care. His approach is focused on delivering personalized, evidence-based care tailored to meet the needs of each individual.

A passion for personalised, evidence-based care

Dr Kumar is deeply committed to person-centered and family-inclusive care. He believes in working collaboratively with patients and their families to create treatment plans that are unique to each person’s needs and circumstances. This individualised approach ensures that patients receive the most effective and appropriate care for their mental health challenges.

His focus on outcome-driven treatment ensures patients not only feel heard but also experience tangible improvements in their mental health. Dr. Kumar is committed to clear communication from the outset, ensuring that patients understand their treatment options and are fully involved in the decision-making process.

A collaborative and ethical approach to care

Dr Kumar’s practice is grounded in collaborative care and ethical principles. He views each patient as an active partner in their treatment journey, and he prioritizes an approach that integrates the biological, psychological, and social aspects of mental health.

He is particularly mindful of the use of medications, carefully weighing their necessity and always considering non-pharmacological alternatives when appropriate. This thoughtful, holistic approach ensures that each patient’s well-being is at the forefront of every decision.

Academic and clinical excellence

Dr Kumar’s commitment to excellence in psychiatry is reflected in his academic achievements and leadership in the field. He is an elected fellow of the European Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (fEAPM), an honor that recognizes his significant contributions to consultation liaison psychiatry. This distinction will be formally presented to him at the 2026 EAPM Conference in Florence.

Dr Kumar has also held prominent academic roles, including Associate Professorship at the Australian National University (ANU) and Full Professorship at Qatar University. In addition, he remains active in mentoring and supervising RANZCP fellows, contributing to the development of the next generation of mental health professionals.

Beyond Psychiatry

Outside of his professional life, Dr Kumar is an avid traveler, music lover, and enthusiastic reader, always seeking new opportunities to expand his knowledge and experiences.

He is also an advanced badminton player and advocates strongly for physical fitness, particularly for individuals with mental health challenges. He believes that incorporating exercise into treatment plans can have a significant, positive impact on both mental and physical health, and he actively encourages patients to integrate physical activity into their routines.
