Esketamine therapy

About

Esketamine is a prescription-only medicine that may be considered by psychiatrists for adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder who have not responded adequately to other treatments.

It is administered as a nasal spray in a hospital setting under strict medical supervision. Esketamine acts on the brain’s glutamate system, which differs from the mechanism of traditional antidepressants.

Treatment decisions are made by a psychiatrist following a comprehensive clinical assessment. Esketamine is typically prescribed in conjunction with an oral antidepressant, and patients are monitored during and after administration in accordance with clinical guidelines.

As with all prescription medicines, esketamine is not suitable for everyone. Potential risks and side effects will be discussed with the treating psychiatrist to determine whether this treatment is appropriate for the individual’s circumstances.

Patients interested in this program should request a referral to one of our psychiatrists for further evaluation.

What is Esketamine Therapy?

Esketamine therapy is a prescription-only medicine that may be used by psychiatrists in certain cases of major depressive disorder. It involves the use of esketamine, administered as a nasal spray that targets the brain's glutamate system.

How does it work?

Esketamine acts on the brain’s glutamate system, which plays a role in neural signalling and mood regulation. This mechanism differs from that of many traditional antidepressants, which primarily act on serotonin or norepinephrine pathways. The effects of treatment vary between individuals and suitability is determined by a psychiatrist following clinical assessment.

How is Esketamine administered?

Esketamine is administered as a nasal spray under the supervision of our trained clinicians. Patients typically receive treatment twice a week initially, and the frequency may decrease over time based on progress and individual needs.

Who Might Be Considered?

A psychiatrist may consider this treatment for adults who:

  • Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder
  • Have not responded to multiple standard treatments

Treatment decisions are made by a specialist following a comprehensive assessment.
